ESTRANGEMENT GRIEF
Disconnection rarely stays just in your mind or in one area of your life.
Unprocessed grief from strained or severed relationships leaks into everything: your career, your self-worth, your decision-making, and your ability to let people in.
The good news?
Acknowledging our disconnections and learning how to mourn the deep grief of estrangement can be the key to coming back to life.

Ready to understand your disconnections?
Join estrangement specialist and therapist KELLY RHYNE for ESTRANGEMENT 101, a free 90-minute live workshop where you can learn more about the ESSENTIALS OF MOURNING ESTRANGEMENT, name the hidden griefs driving your daily habits, and learn how to begin to finally lift the fog.
WHAT IS ESTRANGEMENT?
Estrangement is not a cut off.
It is the progressive distancing that occurs when our beliefs, values, or perspectives are misaligned—or when harm, intentional or not, goes unaddressed.
When our estrangements are ignored, grief begins growing quietly like a tumor, metastasizing and becoming restless until it takes over every dimension of our lives. Ultimately, we face a choice: do we let unexamined estrangements destroy us from the inside out, or do we gather the essentials needed to mourn these losses and begin learning how to live with them?

To anyone carrying the weight of estrangement,
My whole life, I have been drawn to understanding estrangement and the disconnections that lead to it.
-Maybe it’s because I’m a recovering people-pleaser learning that we cannot agree with or please everyone.
-Maybe it’s wanting to understand why relationships drift—whether they explode overnight or quietly fade away.
-Maybe it’s the generational trauma passed down through genetics, family patterns, and the inherited estrangements of my ancestors.
-Maybe it’s trying to make sense of the harm caused in the name of God and how individuals and communities of faith could cause significant physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual damage over a deeply held belief or particular interpretation of scripture.
No matter the source, one reality remained: we must learn how to live with misalignment and harm. Estrangement isn’t just a lost connection; it is the deep, living grief left in its wake. Because disconnection is an unavoidable part of the human experience, I kept asking: How do we learn to carry it?
Searching for that answer shaped my life's work—guiding me as a theatrical performer and musician, through theological study and chaplaincy, and into my work as a clinical social worker specializing in complex trauma and grief.
The Center for Estrangement was born out of a desire to companion and support people mourning these losses—and perhaps even learn to make friends with their grief rather than fighting it.
Whether you feel disconnected from loved ones, feel like a stranger to yourself, or are healing from systemic and cultural harms, I hope this can be a safe enough space where you can bring your grief and begin:
-RESTORING your relationship with yourself, making peace with the parts of you that you’ve had to hide, ignore, or push down to survive.
-IDENTIFYING new ways of relating to others by discovering fresh tools and perspectives to navigate painful ruptures with family, partners, or people who have caused harm.
-RECEIVING support from the world around you—because you do not have to navigate this mourning journey alone.
Wherever you are in your journey, we can take this one small step and one little moment at a time. As Dr. Alan Wolfelt would say, "There are no rewards for speed." The mourning process takes time as we learn how to surrender to the unknown while carrying our stories and experiences with a little more patience, grace and tenderness.
In hope of roots deepening and buds blooming,
